Gaining Invaluable Contacts In The Film Industry

Werner Snyman Film Maker

A 20 year old film and television production student close to graduation, the next step is clear and concise: Work and work hard!

Living in South Africa and growing up in a very supportive home I developed a very active imagination.  As I got older I used it to do everything from stage plays, public speaking and being generally entertaining and goofy. When it got time to choose my field of study at 18 I chose Film Production and I must say, this is the most ecstasy my imagination has ever experienced!

My academic background is an extensive one, taking loads of twists and turns up to here. Initially I wanted to be an engineer, but as time progressed I noticed that it wasn’t where my life was to go. I had always loved music, films and the idea of working/touring globally.  It was and still is a fundamental part of my life, and inspiration for what I do now.  I signed up to a Film and Television production course in 2011 and my life has been a roller-coaster ride since then. I have worked on countless projects including a music video shoot for the South African folk metal band Balyios, working with Martin Bester for a Jeep ad, to the excitement of directing a horror film.  All these projects have not only developed my practical camera, sound and lighting skill but also enriched my creativity.

I recently came across SkillPages in my search for a post-grad job, and I was just amazed. The utter professionalism and helpfulness of the site is a very bright light at the end of a dark tunnel.  SkillPages has allowed me to build an extensive collection of contacts and reach the people in my field more effectively.  I have applied for many positions and have had multiple other opportunities through the contacts gained on SkillPages.

My work is mainly freelance filming for events and creating corporate videos for businesses and so on but let’s be honest, that is not enough!  With SkillPages, I am now able to reach people on an international scale for a chance to work globally; this helps out a lot!

My advice to anyone who is looking to be successful – build up your list of contacts, don’t burn down any bridges and join SkillPages because this is where the magic happens.

    I would love to work with a Film Maker like you in Kenya where there are many talented young people who can articulate their views in English, dance, perform but lack opportunities in creative Videos,short story films Drama and Theatre. The industry needs financial support from entrepreneurs from North America. Let us brain-storm sometime soon.Werner.

    @Lydiah Kubo- Randall.

    Sounds like a hell of a plan man. And yes help from US would be nice, but it is not their responsibility to support us. Its our own countries’ job to do that. Should get together for sure.
